PRELIMINARY SNOWFALL REPORTS FROM THE THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17 EVENT Interpolated and estimated regional 24-hour snowfall ending at 10:00 AM CST (Courtesy of the Iowa Environmental Mesonet) Interpolated and estimated local 24-hour snowfall ending at 10:00 AM CST (Courtesy of the Iowa Environmental Mesonet) A Winter Storm Watch was issued for the area Tuesday afternoon, and a Winter Storm Warning was issued early Wednesday morning for southern parts of the area and Winter Weather Advisory for northern locales.A Flash Flood Warning was issued due to rapidly rising water levels. A whiplash in temperatures led to the rapid melting and refreezing of river ice and an ice jam on the Kankakee River near Wilmington.There was some variability across the city, generally varying from 2 to 5" across the heart of the metro, including 3.8" from the NWS Cooperative Observer near Midway Airport, and 4.1" at the NWS office in Romeoville. The official snowfall for Chicago was 2.9" observed at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.Snowfall rates were key with this storm, as they exceeded one inch per hour in many locations of central into northeast Illinois for a period during Thursday afternoon, and this caused major travel issues in places, including several interstates in Illinois as well as I-65 in northwest Indiana being closed in stretches due to vehicle accidents.Then, a second wave of the system passed through the area in the form of widespread, heavily falling snow. Widespread rain over northern Illinois and northwest Indiana Wednesday night was followed by a cold front Thursday morning.
